I am really interested in trying to face my family tree but I have no idea how to start. I am only able to go back to my grandparents era.

Are the genealogy sites easy to use for novices?
Which is the best site(s) to use?

Am I able to search for free? Or how much do the varying sites charge? How far can I go with the 'free' sites?

Or......is there a service that will help me with info. that I require, advice that I need?

Thanking you in advance for your time.

Those two can kick start your research.......

and good old Google; sometimes entering family names into the Google bar can throw up all sorts of unexpected results.
why don't you join a local class/group? my mum is really into local and family history and knows how to read the registers and what to look for etc!

we apparently are related to samual taverner who owned knightsbridge!
If you are just starting take all your certificates along to the local library and book some computer time to access the most popular site ancestry.co.uk. All libraries hold a membership so you can access for free.
This site gives births, deaths, and marriages, between 1837 and 2005. It also has censuses from 1841 to 1901, certain parish records, and some military records too.
If you find you are enjoying it, then you may wish to subscribe to one or more sites so's you can work from home.
I am a genealogy fanatic so subscribe to ancestry.co.uk, thegenealogist, and find my past.
There is also a website familysearch.org which is free and useful for information pre-dating 1837.
Try your local library, they quite often have census records there, you can use your grandparents details to help you trace your line back farther. I don't know where you are based but here in Scotland you can trace your ancestors back byu going online through Scotland's people it's a government website, you pay a small fee, but I think it may be cheaper than these commercial sites, if there is a site up here I'm sure there must be something similar for England and Wales. Happy hunting.
lol nungate it must only be a small fee if you're scottish.
I used Scotlands People but have to keep buying quite expensive credits, as there is no annual subscription available (unless I'm missing it)
freebmd. you know where and when grandparents born, use this service to find each grandparents parents by seeing their fathers name, on this site you can also find grandparents marriage and if they were born before 1911, go for the censuses but you pay for those. Find my past is a fairly reasonably priced site, and if you get that far you can go back through a few generations without leaving your computer. Alternatively go to your local library who can usually give advice, Kathleen

A nearby main library may well have microfiche of records you may ask to examine. But a genealogy website subscription allows you to search from home much more easily.
