Happened to be discussing kids' comics with Mrs Spod today and I asked if she remembered Beano. 'Never read it, it was a boys' comic'. I could not have been more surprised. There were, of course, gender specific comics (Eagle, Shoot, Twinkle, Bunty), but Beano? Really?

What's your view?
Also, should this have been under Arts and Literature?

Boo, I loved Misty. My sister used to get it every week (I got the boring Tammy - but only to keep me quiet till I could get hold of Misty) and she got the annual every year. I still remember loads of the stories from it :)
I got Score and Roar.

Every season you got a set of cardboard football league tables, so you could rearrange them each week after the 3pm Saturday matches.
I read Beano, Dandy, Bunty, Twinkle, anything inc the back of the Kelloggs and Nabisco cereal packets
I had the Candy & Andy comic/magazine when I was little; and believe that tucked away in the back of a drawer, I still have the model 'Stripey' minicar featured in the stories.

Does anyone else remember this?

Then I graduated on to Dandy, Beano.....Blue Jeans and more or less finished at Smash Hits!
I remember reading Jackie but as I lived abroad it took months to arrive, so wasn't as trendy as it might have been.

In Victorian days there was a girls' magazine called The Monthly Packet, which I suppose was a bit unfortunate.
I used to get Dandy, Beano, and Knockout............my sister used to get Bunty and Girls' Crystal.......
The Eagle was my favourite comic. Loved the Biggles books. Ooops, I really am female!
Surely Beryl the Peryl was in the Dandy ? Started in the Topper ?

Minnie the Minx was a Beano character, IIRC.

I'm sure there were other female characters too, but one sort of expects most to be male as traditionally it is more socially acceptable to show males playing up, or being made fun of, than females.
Bunty, Judy, Mandy, Diana, Jackie, Fab 208 - I used to get all of those, I still have the annuals somewhere, my daughter also got Bunty, sadly they don't seem to be around anymore. Does anyone out there remember a comic called Treasure?
I was never keen on the Bunty. I found it a bit girly.
I was a Whizzer and chips man.
yes, you're right, OG, Minnie was in the Beano, along with Little Plum and the duelling wizards, plus the Bash St Kids, also chiefly male.
