Hush little baby don't say a word. mummy's gonna buy you a mocking bird etc.
or there was one about bump the elephant, the only line I can now remember is "bump the elephant isn't quite as elegant" (or maybe it is "eloquent", but that may be part of another verse!)
OH always used to sing teddy bears picnic.
Nellie the Elephant
Apparently I liked Puff the Magic Dragon. Except for the last verse which made me cry.
I've never done singing - would be tantamount to child cruelty with my voice. I am currently watching 24 with thing 1 and thing 2 while they fall asleep. (Please don't report me to child line.)
ally bally..ally bally bee..sitting on yer mammies knee..crying for a wee bawbie..tae buy some couters candy....was that in tune?...
rock a bye baby over the hill tops, always worked for mine!......they were asleep in minutes!.....bear in mind that my voice is not musical!.....lol.....seemed to work though!.....
Likewise with Sherrard I've not much of a voice, but I used to recite 'The tale of Custard the Dragon' to my eldest daughter every night- and it's still a lovely special thing when she comes to stay and we're curled up on the sofa.
I sang a made-up song every night to my daughter to the tune of 'I have a liitle nut tree'. Don't think I stopped until she was about 9 ish.
Would just like to add that I have been doing this since Christmas - I am now on day 5 of 24. It's hard to break these habits and seems virtually impossible with two of them.

wow! fab answers, her fav story is wheres my cow by terry prachett and my cat likes to hide in boxes. but i can remember one night where i sung fre jacques for four hours solid whilst she sobbed her heart out there was nothing else to soothe her (she had a chronic skin infection and couldnt settle, shes 2 now btw but cant seem to change my avitar).
Both of ours would drop off to The Muffin Man or How Much Is That Doggy In The Window (without the "woof woof").
They're both taller than me now, where do the years go? :)
douglas, I don't know where the years go to but I know they get there very quickly, but the bonus is the memories they leave behind.
Murraymints used to love that song, until the kid in the flat above kept singing it over and over again for an hour every Sunday at 7.00, but kept missing out the last line, it used to drive me nuts, went on for 6 months till they moved out. Did try to tell him the missing lines, but being only 2 he knew better.
my mum always used to sing to my younger sis. 'and I love you soooooooo, and you are a stinky pooooooooos' :-)
My father used to serenade me with:

R stands for Royal,
Royal the pride of the line.
A stands for the Action we saw,
Down in old Palestine.
S stands for the Service we give,
Morning, noon and night.
C stands for the Colours we wear,
Blue, yellow and white.

I was also regaled with a little ditty named Keiller's Jam.
He was proud of his 5 years overseas during the Second World War.
I remember my nan singing 'my grandfathers clock'
My grandfather's clock
Was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half
Than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn
Of the day that he was born,
And was always his treasure and pride;
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

CHORUS:
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

In watching its pendulum
Swing to and fro,
Many hours had he spent while a boy;
And in childhood and manhood
The clock seemed to know,
And to share both his grief and his joy.
For it struck twenty-four
When he entered at the door,
With a blooming and beautiful bride;
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
CHORUS

My grandfather said
That of those he could hire,
Not a servant so faithful he found;
For it wasted no time,
And had but one desire,
At the close of each week to be wound.
And it kept in its place,
Not a frown upon its face,
And its hand never hung by its side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
CHORUS

It rang an alarm
In the dead of the night,
An alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we knew that his spirit
Was pluming for flight,
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time,
With a soft and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
Pity my very careful formatting was changed so it is not easy to see that RASC
is spelled out. Royal Army Service Corps.
My grandson used to fall asleep in my arms when he was a baby to me
singing twinkle twinkle little star. It was the only one I could remember all
the words to!Mr. Cupid couldn't understand it because he says I'm tone-deaf.

4get, mum sang that stinky poos song to all of us :(

My 2 like the poem by AA Milne, think it was kermit the frog who sang it too

Halfway down the stairs
is a stair
where i sit.
there isn't any
other stair
quite like
it.
i'm not at the bottom,
i'm not at the top;
so this is the stair
where
I always
stop.

Halfway up the stairs
Isn't up
And it isn't down.
It isn't in the nursery,
It isn't in town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run round my head.
It isn't really
Anywhere!
It's somewhere else
Instead!
