..My home buildings and contents insurance for last year was £172 through Marks & Spencer Money.Today I received the schedule for Oct 2011 to Oct 2012 and its £371.50.Nothing has changed, no claims made in the last year, all information is exactly as last year, but an increase of 116% come on ...obviously they dont want me as a customer anymore...maybe Mrsjan and me aren't high risk enough for them...well they've got their wish 'Compare the Meerkat.com' here we come....simples...:-)

That is truly outrageous!
Had the same from my car insurance company. I had a small claim but insurance went up by 110%. Like you I phoned the meerkats and got a much better deal.
Rip off Britain strikes again. They are all at it, if you ring them and say you can get the same cover with another company ( name them) for whatever you were quoted they will drop their premium to match. I did it last year with my car insurance and again this year with the house insurance.
my house insrance is £653 this year
Bednobs, d'you live in a mansion?
Was last year you first year with M&S?

New customers are often given discounted cover........naturally when the time comes for renewal, all of the discounts magically disappear......
nope, 2 bedroomed terrace
If you are over 50, RIAS is recommended by Which?
Same as mine, which I have to renew at beginning of October. I hope it isn't going up that much!
I bet its the postal code thing - apparently there is a call for an Inquiry into this over car premiums, maybe it should extended to home insurance too.

Jack.. no it wasn't, it was our second year with M&S....and our last!!
i live about 10 meters away from a canal and 20 away from a river. We have had 3 claims in the last 5 years (not to do with the river). our area is "high risk" for flood. we live in a quarry area, meaning our immediate next door neighbour and their next door neighbours have had to have work done for subsidence in the last 10 years. That premium includes buildings, contents (unlimited for both) plus accedental damage both in the property and away from home, plus legal cover. It was the cheapest i could get!
Quite right, too...
When I tried to insure the car for Mrs DaGinge with 8 years no-claims it went up by £100 this year! I was told by the broker that the firm we were with were no longer insuring cars because they had been told by the FSA to stop or be closed down (????strange I know????) and the cheapest they could find was in fact what they had quoted! Despite trawling through all the money saving web sites, it appeared that they were in fact telling the truth as I could find nothing comparably cheaper giving the same cover. I can recommend Academy Insurance even if you just try a quote from them, what have you got to lose?
shop around. Directline are cheap (but will also push their premium up in the second year, so be prepared to shop around again).

For my details so far the best offer is 'more than'
The Post Office quoted us £568 (two bed bungalow) I shopped around and got the same cover for £139 with Saga - very surprised.
Looks as if you have to change every year. I changed for this year and got my house insurance for half the price the company I was with last year wanted to charge me. So if this one does the same I shall change again.
