Hi

I think I may have a problem with my brake pads and discs in my rover. When I put my foot down to brake it makes a strange sound (not a screeching sound though) The only way I can describe is like a very faint rocket sound if that makes sense!!! Anyway i'm 99% certain its the brake pads or discs as the same thing happened in my old car and that turned out to be the problem.

Does anybody know what I should be expecting to pay if I took it to a local garage??

And, whats the most expensive thing to pay for when it comes to brakes on the rover 25? (just incase its something other than the pads/discs)

Thanks

Hi, that sound you hear is it a grating noise, if yes the pads need replacing, at times you can get away with the disk replacement but it depends of the wear, you can get the lot replaced for under £200 but that depends where you take the car to get done, use a local family run garage, do not use K. Fit otherwise you will end up replacing the engine knowing them

Thanks for the info. Do you think it might be worth it to go to KWIK FIT for the free no obligation brake test to see whats actually wrong and then take it somewhere tried and trusted?
Why not take it somewhere tied and trusted in the first place? Save messing around. You shouldn't mess with brakes.
It may be you just need pads, especially if a warning light has not yet come on (If a 25 has one that is).
As said, K.Fit, do not bother, you will end up getting other things that the car does not need, did this sound / noise come about when the car has been through rain then been standing for a day or so? if so its only rust on your Disks that should clear, how long have the pads been on there car? how far does you foot go down on the pedal? the area that you live in there must be a small family run garage! if so get them to give you a Quote before doing the job, it will not take all day to replace the front, Do not give the YES to do the job until you are sure & you have checked around first.
Yes .. Just ask them to physically check for pad wear first.
They may not be badly worn down at all.

Rover 25 pads are about £18-25 a set.
Many years ago my brother had some work done at Kwik Fit, and on his way home he was overtaken by one of his own wheels.
lol mate ...

Sounds about right : )

Yeah I've heard negative things about k. fit too!!

I have been in my car twice now since I posted on here, and each time the sound wasn't there. It seems to have gone now. I only do very short journeys in it so whether that makes a difference, I don't know?

The thing is I first noticed this noise a couple of weeks ago and I have since been on holiday for a week, and ever since I have been back it hasn't made the sound. It seems weird to me.

It hasn't been in any rain that I can remember.

It just baffles me as to what it could be. I have it in the back of my mind that something needs replacing down there but now that it has stopped making the sound I'm not sure what to do. I suppose its wise to take it to a reputable garage to get checked out with it being as important as brakes.

does it still mean brake pads/ disc problems if the weird sound comes and goes??
I would now agree with TVR in that it was probably light surface rust on the discs. Common if the car has been washed and left or not used for a few days.
If the discs are worn somewhat, the outer edges of the pad wear over the disc edge .. this can cause a rubbing sound until it comes off.
Other reason as stated is surface rust, which disappears once the car has been around the block a couple of times.

In fairness, Kwik-Fit in my experience, used to be terrible for advising you needed this and that done, but I think they're a lot better these days.
