Last week we noticed an ants nest on the edge of the lawn? We said to each other that a Green Woodpecker would enjoy that.

This afternoon, low and behold, a Green Woodpeacker popped in and had a feast.

How did he know they were there and where would he most likely come from? We live close to farm land and marshes. A little bit of light woodland some distance away.

How wonderful - I guess the woodpecker has either excellent eyesight or the ants make some sort of noise too high for us to hear, as they go about their business!
I think they spot the little patches of crumbly earth....
That's more like it, rowan! are woodpeckers low-flyers?
what is more likely they have a learned response to the colour of soil patches in their locality...a bit like training pigeons to recognise targets like orange life rafts

Thank you both. I guess they live in the copse some distance away and fly over checking for changes. No sightings today.
