Wi-Fi installation for dummies .............

I have a PC that I use most of the time - I have Virgin Media broadband. I also have a macbook that I use upstairs in my flat- usually just to surf the internet.

I previously had wi-fi installed using a router - but the router died. I am considering purchasing a set of two plugs that can transfer the data via my electricity circuits.

Can I do this if they are on different circuits - not sure that they are but I will have to get it checked out.

Is it really as simple as trailing a wire from the cable modem to a plug in the wall and at the other end having a plug in the wall with a wire that plugs into my macbook?

Is this system more secure than using a router.

Does anyone have any recommentations as to which system I should purchase ?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice that you can give.

Why not just replace the wireless router?
Googling seems to suggest the price is similar (or a bit cheaper) for a wireless cable router as compared to a couple of mains adaptors.

Is one better than the other ?

Router versus the mains adaptors - who wins the fight ?
I use a router, simply because it is easy to connect my laptop, smartphone, pcs, internet tv and log my visitors in to it when necessary.

But the wired adapter is quicker and more secure. However, most if not all wireless routers have ethernet ports too, so you can quickly plug your laptop in if you are worried about security when using internet banking and so on.

As you have a desktop pc I would really settle for the router with the pc connected by ethernet and the laptop connected via wifi.

Thanks gents - I tried my old router out but nothing happened so I have bought a Belkin from Staples. I might be back to bug you again on Tuesday - unless the installation is completely idiot proof.

I had Office 2011 installed on the Mac and I have to say that it looks good. It has been in to the computer hospital getting a new keyboard due to the fact that I killed the last keyboard. They upgraded me to Lion - pretty apt for a cat lover.
