Hi, had the usual surface algae and some green water in the goldfish tank recently, went down the usual route, algae cleaner, changed filters , no good, emptied and sterilised everything and replaced it back with clean water, and cor blimey it has turned so green it is like the poor blooming fish are swimming in pea soup. It has so many chemicals ( bought from pets at home , algae clear and green water treatment ) I am loathe to use any more, without another complete clean. Is anyone else having this problem and what can I do to rid the water of its' green hue ?

Is your fish tank in sunlight from a window? Try moving it away from near direct sunlight,This helps stop the algae from growing as much.

Thanks for your reply RAV1D, the tank is not in direct sunlight, indirect , and in the same place as it has been for years.
Right....here we go!

When you say you cleaned and replaced everything....do you mean everything?
You never NEVER throw away the filter media [sponges, ceramics] as this is where you good bacteria grow.
By all means change the water and scrub the algae away but leave the sponges alone, all they require is a rinsing out in old tank water.
I have yet to find a algae remover that truly works, just hard work and lots of water changes!
How big is your tank, what fish do you have and what filter are you running?

Hi Lisa, no we didn't sterilize or change the filter bits and gubbins, they just had a rinse. we cleaned the glass , gravel , air stone all because the water had gone green . We are used to algae but this is different and more annoying ! It is a fifty five litre tank with two goldies in it, x
Ahhh well there's your problem then lol....and though part of really hopes you are joking I suspect not :0(...
Seriously!!!!! 5 litres is about what my kitchen jug holds twice over!!!! You can not keep any fish in that!
Here's hoping you have got the measurements wrong....Could you give me the dimensions in inches please?

hi Lisa.......I said 55 litres !!!xx
Don't worry about algae, check this out... http://www.bbc.co.uk/...asia-pacific-14328258
My mistake! But still no where near big enough for two old fish.... sorry.
Sorry Divegirl, but i'd disagree with you there. 15 gallon tank for 2 goldfish ?....there's plenty of room in there.
15 gallons is gold fish heaven!!!
No....a pond is goldfish heaven!

For a fish that has the potential to reach 8-10 inches 15 g is not enough!

oh and btw.....55 litres is only 13 g ;0)
