What plants grow well in the shade and under trees?

There are hundreds. Too many to even think about listing them here. You can search under "plants for shade", buy a gardening book or visit your local library. You will be spoilt for choice. If you want a day out then visit your local garden centre and ask them.
As mike says there are loads, but here's some taken from 'The Flowering Shrub Expert' by Dr.D.G.Hessayon.

Aucuba japonica, Camellia species, Fatsia japonica, Hypericum calycinum, Ligustrum species, Lonicera nitilda, Mahonia aquifolium, Osmanthus heterophyllus, Prunus laurocerasus, Rubus species, Skimmia japonica, Viburnum davidii and Vinca species. All suitable for shade.
