One in three of the sailors in Nelson's fleet was a Scotsman as was one in five of the captains of his vessels. When he raised the famous signal "England expects every man this day to do his duty" (or flags to that effect), one Scottish sailor turned to a compatriot and asked why Nelson had said 'England' rather than 'Britain'. He got the reply: "Och! He kens fine the Scots will dae their duty, mon!"
