I parked on the hotel car park across the road from my office because i was late for a meeting. I intended to pop out and move to my usual place, and i forgot, so the car was there for the day.

It appears I may get a fine through the post offering photo evidence, and fining me £60, rising to 80 if unpaid.

I am happy to pay a fine, but i think £60 is excecssive - I believe that i can offer a standrd tarrif penalty - £30 and this is agreeable within the law.

Can anyone confirm if this is true?

Are there any signs for penalty costs ?

If you get a penalty notice for £60 then send them a cheque for £30 and a note saying it is an offer of full and final payment and by cashing it they accept your terms.

Sounds good McMouse - I doubt they will pursue me for £30.

As I said, I accept the fault is mine - there are clear signs all over advising of penalties - but i think that £60 is excessive.
I'm not advocating that you dont pay and TBH I think £60 is pretty light in the fines department, after all you should not have parked there, but take a look at this

I had some good advice off peppipoo.com recently when my stupid bf managed to get himself a parking ticket.
Any payment would be an admission of "guilt" leaving you open to costs if they went to court not to mention an elevated fine.
I know it's unfairly high, but personally I wouldn't argue the toss for the difference and just pay it. It could have been worse, they could have clamped you which would have probably cost more.

Andy, the onus is on them to prove who parked the car there. DO NOT PAY!
Write to them, admit you are the registered keeper but say you cannot remember who was driving the car on that date. Ask them to provide evidence of who was driving. If they send a photo of you, then you will have to cough up. If they cannot provide evidence and then they still keep demanding money from them, write and say you do not want to hear from them again and if they persist, you will report them for harrassment.
