hello all, not being morbid just wondering really - if a disaster happened like in the films where a virus killed off the majority of the population, how long would it be before supplies of gas, electricity and water stopped reaching households? And what about mobile phones? Would it be instantaneous or would they just peter out gradually?

i would want to know when the cake ran out
Don't know how you can answer that as if it were a virus not everyone would die at the same time and it then depends on how many people could keep the services running...best to get stocked up on the drink and eats and go merrily down that road methinks.
There was a great documentary on Nat Geo called Life after People. Apparently the last remnant of our existence would be Mount Rushmore.
I'd suspect fairly rapidly, although i'd not want to put a time on it. As soon as the energy supply fails most other things stop running. And most lay folk are in no position to take over skilled specialist knowledge jobs.
Hard to answer, but i too would be curious to know the answer.
and why exactly do you need to know this genstm1980!?!
I think we'd be ok so long as Jake Gylenhall's in teh country, that's the type of thing he usually sorts out isn't it?
I suppose if I worked in a power station I wouldn't just go on churning out electricity to keep you happy, I'd go out shooting and eating people's pets.
