At some lights there is a maroon coloured area with a white painted bike sign on it. What's it for?

the Dutch have a much better system. The roads have a separate lane especially for bikes. No pedestrians are at risk, no car drivers annoyed. Although there are probably more cyclists there (it being so flat!!)
