At some lights there is a maroon coloured area with a white painted bike sign on it. What's it for?

Bikes
Yeah but only white bikes.
I dunno but I bet the bike crowd has got their friends in the authorities to give them another privilege. It's not special colours used for the old, "ha ha ha you took ages trying to get around this cyclist so we are now allowing them to push in at the lights so you can got though it all again" trick, is it ?
its a bike box. The bikes can then get in front of the other traffic and get priority.
They can also be green (the painted area, not the bikes). I assume this is a county-to-country variation. The idea is that cyclists can roll up to the front and then spread out a little at the traffic lights, they do it anyway, so you might as well give them a designated space for it!

LOL. Do you think there is organized pressure from cycling clubs?

Haven't come across this myself, yellow Box Junction is familiar.
I just assume they infiltrate the local councils to get their requirements agreed.

Where I live every space for bikes or buses are full of cars and vans
I like your suspicious thought process on these things OG. To look at the upside: cycle-paths and special areas for bikes make it much harder to kill cyclists, therefore saving you (or anyone) the hassle of court & jail / dragging the body away and burying it in the wood, making up an alibi and never speaking of that day at Clapham Junction until you repent on your death-bed.
Some are just two white lines with a bike in the middle.
Well, they shouldn't be really, but it's how the world goes. Generally speaking they wouldn't be if a cyclist was there, so maybe they're using the space efficiently?
i think it is good that they are looking after the cyclist

I have nearly been run over 7/8 times while living in London. Every single incident by a cyclist. Every incident when cyclists were flouting laws that other traffic has to follow. I hate cyclists.
Oh, some of us are OK China. But then, I do strange things like stop at traffic lights.
if cyclists followed all the signs they may hit a post or two

I'll admit it.... but those boxes annoy me!

You spend ages stuck behind a cyclist, eventually you're able to overtake them safely (I won't overtake bikes right close to them, so there has to be a gap in oncoming traffic) and then you get to a set of lights and the cyclist trundles to the front so the car drivers are stuck behind them for ages again.
bikes???? bah....
I have been knocked down by a cyclist............and he just buggered off.
