System Restore Problem?

On my previous laptop (XP IE7) I was able to go into System Restore ans up came a calendar with some bold dates and I was able to highlight one of these and go back to before a certain problem occurred.
Since I have been on Windows 7 IE8 or is it 9, all I get is a message 'cannot restore' every time and 'help' tells me it is because I need to disable my antivirus (I never did this in the past)
I disabled my 'avast' and my 'zone alarm' but makes no difference. Is Restore different with Windows 7 as I don't see the calendar like before?

I have vista and have tried to use restore several times and it has never worked. I've always had to find other solutions. It never worked on my previous PC either . In fact the only time I was able to use a restore facility was on an older PC using Norton Works.
I know none of this helps you except to know you are not alone.
