Looked on the internet for this and so many sites say different things.

The y axis, Is that what you control such as temp, time, concentration? and the x axis the variable you have no control on such as refractive index etc

I was asking if that was the answer! I got it now!
Usually, the x-axis is used for the independent variable, i.e. the one you "control" and the y-axis for the dependent (response) variable.

e.g. plotting a time vs. temperature graph, you would plot time on the x-axis (say you take a measurement every 10 seconds) and the measured temperature value on the y-axis, after each time interval.

There is no rule saying you MUST do it this way, though.
I think it's better to put them the other way round- what you control is better on the x axis.
Just have a look at a few graphs in text books.
