hi there all of you and thanks for all the suggestions:
soaps - we are just thinking of getting some blinds for our windows - havebeen here for 12 years with naked windows but it's time to make it look desirable. don't worry about unless it bugs you
scotman - i will give it a go. cocoa is not the answer.
pixi - i don't smoke and wouldn't know to get hold of weed and drugs don't appeal to me, so i'll have to give those two a miss, but thanks.
dotty - i'm giving that one a go but tend to read for about an hour and then get up again, wide awake

many thanks so much to all of you. i've given up drinking coffee and tea after 3 pm but . . . . no zzzzzs

I took Amitriptyline (sp?) which "zombified" me and made me increadibly depressed. Ironic, since it's meant to be an anti-depressant.
I drive my poor wife mad with it! I can be watching a good film on TV, and falling asleep in the chair, get up, go to bed, and I'm suddenly wide awake. I can't take sleeping tablets because of other medication I take. If I have a drink (of any sort, hot chocolate or a Scotch) after 8pm, I'm in and out of bed to the bathroom, I have a pile of reading and puzzle books etc by the bed, but the light disturbs my wife, and those silly little book lights aren't bright enough for me. I got me a telescope and put it in the loft - it's wonderful, looking at the stars, but I can be there for hours, then when I'm tired, it's getting up time!
Yoga relaxation exercises. I am the same as you but if I practice relaxation exercises I fall asleep. The main muscles to relax are your face and then gradually work down your body. I find I never get beyond my shoulders. Imagine you are sinking into a big fluffy cloud. So comfortable.
I can fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow but I can be awake after about 2 hrs and not be able to get back to sleep properly and then keep waking up about every hour. Its most annoying whilst OH snores away all night

headwreak - yes thanks i finally looked at the clock at about 5.00 and then the alarm went at 6.30 so i did manage something. just makes me feel as though i'm not functioning on all cylinders the next day.
thank you i had a lovely b'day - quiet but lovely.
thanks about the avatar. it is a photo i took of a piece of public glass on display on murano. stunning. shame about the crowd control barriers all round it. think they could have thought of something else to keep the public from touching it, maybe they have by now.
