Just bought a cheap laptop and it's saying " Local Disc (C) Fat 32 18.6 GB 9.1 GB used
51% Free Space, then also " Local Disc (D) Fat 32 18.6 GB 0.0 GB used 100% Free Space. My question is how does Local disc D come into play, is it when Local disc C gets full up or if i download something how do I put it on Local disc D ?

Firstly, to clear one thing up, memory and hard drive space are not the same thing, you are asking about hard drive space, not memory.

No, the computer won't automatically put things onto the D drive when C gets full, you have to put stuff there yourself, you can do that when you download anything by simply selected the D drive instead of the C drive when prompted.

to try and make sure the D drive is used though I'd suggest moving your my documents folder onto the D drive, then anything you save in your docs folder will be on the D driver automatically and it make life a lot easier for future system recovery or backups.

What a great answer, thanks, you learn something new every day, or at least I do !!
Although your laptop is showing separate C and D drives, it is almost certain that the laptop is fitted with a single physical 40GB disk drive, which has been partitioned in half, to give two apparent disks of equal volume.

It is important to appreciate this – since should the physical disk fail for some reason – both your C and D dives will fail. Whereas within my desktop PC, I have two physical hard drives – and regularly back-up files between the drives.

Therefore you should not rely on any back-up between your drives, to save important files.
