ABH sentence

my friend had got charged with common assault (ABH) and was kept in remand for 2 months until his sentence day. he got sentenced to 6 months so will be doing half of that so he will be serving 3 months. however i wanted to know how comes the time he spent in remand is not getting reduced from his sentence and he has to do the whole 3months.

no it was not his 1st offence his got previous convictions
