Where I live Tesco is 10 miles away. My local pub closed down in November. (Having said that it's still a mile away) Signs have gone up saying it is going to open as Tesco Extra. Apart from being smaller, what's the difference? Is it more expensive than an ordinary Tesco.

Isnt there Tesco Metro as well?
Tesco Metro are city centre outlets.
Tesco,Sainsbury and M&s have small local outlets.
The prices are the same as their large branches,it's just they don't have the full ranges that the bigger supermarkets do.
Tesco Extra is usually outside towns or in smaller towns),Metro is usually in busy parts of larger towns
Sainsbury's have Local, which covers both of the above, but is usually in small towns or villages.
M&S have quite few small food outlets, some housed in BP garages.
Apologies Tesco Extra IS for the larger branches that sell clothes, electrics etc.
The biggest Tesco in uk is Tesco Extra, Pitsea, Basildon in Essex. Some useless trivia that is finally relevant
Invictas if you think the prices are the same I must email Tesco as I can assure you that the Express is considerably dearer, and the manageress of my local one admitted this when I queried some prices with her.

Thanks for your answers. .When it opens I will report on it.
I just put in my order for the month on line at Tesco. It will be delivered tomorrow between 1 and 3 p.m, I have been using this method of shopping for sometime now and so far there have been no errors or breakages. The charge for delivery varies but I always choose the cheapest one, which is £3.50. I am sure that this is much cheaper or as cheap as it would cost to go in a car and not so much hassle. I get evouchers via email now and then and all the usual savings. I like it!
Well craft we have a Tesco Metro &Tesco Express near me in London SW7,.and their prices are no different to the ones in the Tesco Extra a bit further away.
Maybe London has so much competition that they have to keep the prices equal?
Yes, the other ABers are correct in saying that things are more expensive in these smaller stores, and they do not sell much of the Value range.
smaller and dearer but sometimes open later; they're supposed to replace the old-time neighbourhood convenience stores they have run out of business.
A Sainsbury's Local opened near me last year. It is slightly dearer than the large stores, but the range is very limited, obviously because of lack of space. For example they only ever stock 3 varieties of Heinz soup, vegetable, tomato and chicken. It took me 6 months of lobbying the manager before they started to stock Lurpak butter.
