Which part of Germany are you going to?  I live in Munich in the south of Germany nearish to the Alps.  The weather is pretty similar to UK weather although is often hotter in summer and colder in winter.  Last Christmas (no sing song please!!) it was pretty mild here but afterwards we had months of snow and -22C on a couple of occasions.  However, although it can get very cold it's not like the horrible 'wet cold' like you have in the UK.

So... just bring clothes that you'd normally wear in the UK.  Check weather reports for Germany, especially if it's a German weather report website; they have a fantastic ability to accurately predict the weather, well, imo of course!

Are you going in a Double Decker Bus??

I lived in Hamburg for 6 months over last winter.  Around Xmas time is got VERY cold, but thankfully rarely wet.  Up there, it's not the air temperature that'll get you, but the wind.  It really is like 1000 daggers trying to cut your face.  However, the days there in the winter are beautiful (most of the time), with clear blue skies and a crisp air.  (I'd forgotten how much I miss it!).

I echo KebabMeister's sentiments about using German sites to check the weather.  the BBC is unusally unreliably for HH weather.  Try out your German at www.wetter.de

Enjoy your trip.  You can always keep warm by drinknig Gluehwein at the markets! :-)
