we were having one of those conversations in the car this morning and disagreed on whether or not people who choose burial are always embalmed. or are people usually buried unembalmed. anyone know?

Well you should have been. There are many reasons to refuse embalming, especially as it is an additional extra.
Yes there was an extra charge for embalming and if we wanted the use of the chapel of rest that would of been extra too. I am going back 14 years ago, things may have changed now.
No, they haven't.
morticians in hospital clean up a corpse before undertakers collect in body bags. At home I expect the family would do same for deceased. Embalming is injecting corpse with chemicals after draining bodily fluids. Not normal procedure of high street undertakers.

we've had to arrange 5 funerals over the years, one within the last 3 years, and all were cremations. three were hospital deaths, one a hospice, and one at home. on none of these occasions was embalming mentioned nor was it itemised on the bill. that's what lead me to think that it's not done very much and would be something you'd have to specifically ask for.
i'm still none the wiser actually, there seems to be a divided opinion.
