For some reason I have started looking at the menus of Michelin star restaurants and I am quite amazed at the number of them who offer 'cheese from the trolley'. Is it just me or does that sound really naff and old-fashioned?

Ah, but you should see the cheese....... there use to be a posh restaurant here, and he had a wheel of 12 different cheeses on his trolley. It's a bit like "sweets from the trolley" when they used to wheel that day's desserts up to your table for you to pick.
You can never go wrong with a fully loaded cheese trolley and variety of grapes, crackers and breads.

It just conjours up images of some sad old bits of cheese that have seen better days (like the last slice of Black Forest Gateau) - I've no doubt that the cheese is absolutely lovely, just think the term is naff.
Well sher, may be some would see it that way, but I think that lots of folk love to have the cheeseboard after a meal, especially if they're not partial to desserts, My OH never has a dessert, but really enjoys the cheeseboard instead, with a good strong coffee, he says it really finishes off his meal!...........Me I go for the dessert trolley every time!...................lol..................

It's just the trolley thing that is bugging me - have visions of Basil Fawlty wheeling out some dusty old cheese or sad looking desserts/
I think it sounds better like this Sherrardk.

"fromage du véhicule de luxe"

Lets see who gets it.
don't speak any French Micky, but I think it means deluxe cheese trolley!..............lol............
You should buy cheese from somewhere like La Fromagerie.

If you ask for Cheddar, they will ask you which farm you prefer, and let you try each one.

If you ask for Brie, they will ask if you want a young, Spring Brie (cows in the fields, eating grass), or a mature Winter Brie (cows in the sheds, eating hay - produces a different character of cheese).

Once you've made a choice, they will need to know when you are planning to eat it, because different cheeses of the same type will reach perfection on different days.

And THAT ... is when you get fab cheese.

A restaurant should take the same sort of care, to give you an exquisite cheese experience.

If you suspect that the cheese is just an easy option for the restaurant, then you should never have it ... because it will be (as you say) naff and old fashioned.
