The days when it was possible to sneer at Aldi/Lidl are surely now well behind us.

Tonight's menu :

Fish and pickled veg Sushi

Smashed Avocado on Cheese Flatbread Thins

Pasta Salad - with spinach and pine nuts with a virgin olive oil dressing

Pizza - Stone-baked, crispy and very thin with spinach, mozzarella, basil and tomato

All from Herr Aldi, as it happens - quite a lot proudly badged as 'Sourced in Ireland', but I'm sure there are equivalent UK versions.

I'm sure Waitrose would do it just as well - but you'd need rather deeper pockets

Bottle of SuperValu Vacqueyras to go with - €9.99 - a serious bargain, given the loopy prices that good wine goes for here.

Today I had one tin of chilli con carne from Marks and Spencer’s for £4.
Yes I did write £4 a tin….
Not a pizza fan but that one was good.

Haven't been in a Waitrose since a friend took me out for a day treat just after MrG died.
She took me (Aldi fan) to Waitrose to show me what a good supermarket was like. It was a thrilling day out. :-(

Pasta Salad 2.99

All in euros

Easily enough to feed 3 people, for less than €5 each
where's the caviar? Irish sturgeon eggs are, apparently, delish. Now what are you two Kerry-lovers celebrating - and what dessert? Surely a tiramisu made by your fair hand? And then a little Tokaji or Torcolato to accompany it?
Was it enough to give you a sexual thrill D . ? :-)
the mind boggles at that thought, anne....yeuck, I now need my Waitrose paper towel sheets.....
All my bread is flat.
My finds were at Lidl...a 3 minute walk from Aldi. Fresh rainbow trout...I've not seen it since pre-pandemic and that was at Sainsbury's/ Marks. Also Truffle Cheddar...Somerset Barber Cheddar.
Oh, and their delightful 85% dark chocolate.
Ooh! Definitely 'posh nosh'. (Did you get the butler to serve it up or was one of the kitchen maids permitted to bring it upstairs to you?).

Being merely one of the hoi polloi, I just had a well-buttered jacket, topped up with half a can of this

and a generous portion of grated cheddar.

Just to prove that I'm not totally 'un-posh' though, it was washed down with Earl Grey tea ;-)
yeah gads, Douglas, throw in the concept of yeast into this and the mind really starts to turn inside out.....
Absolutely hate sushi, but the rest of the menu gets a thumbs up from me.
Funnily enough most of the wealthy farmer types in this area shop in Lidls and Aldi.
