Actually, that nearly was the whole clue which was: "a sojourn, once" i. e. i was looking for an old word meaning sojourn. I had created a small problem for myself by having "peel tower" as another answer rather than "pele tower" the alternative spelling. But now all is resolved thanks to you. I am grateful
