I regulary stay in Amsterdam, and as business has got worse, my standard of hotel has slowly gone down. In the midprice range IGolden Tulip Inntel is hard to beat, being new, a couple of minutes walk from Centraal Station and Dam Square, and on a pedestrianised street.

Nieuwezijdskolk 19, 1012 PV, Amsterdam, - (31 20) 5301818 - Just target=_blank>http://www.goldentulip.com/site/

Just round the corner is Sofitel, which I also like.

But the best - if you can get a discounted price - is the Crowne Plaza at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 5. But itsprices seem to go up and down at a whim. All three are within sight of each other (if you can see round corners). Plaza has bigger rooms and a swimming pool.

You need to check the discount sites to get best deals, and also check if your employer gets a corporate discount you can use

The Inntel is nice, but if you want class and nostalgia go and stay in the Kraznapolsky - 5 stars, beautiful hotel http://amsterdam.hotel-prices.net/ams-kras.html
Don't go to the big souless Inntell type hotels. You may not get a trouser press, but you'll have more fun at a small privately run place - I like the easy going Hotel de Munck (www.hoteldemunck.com) which is a proper canal house with an eccentric and friendly Dutch owner. His 50's juke box keeps you entertained at breakfast. Easy tram ride from the station and near good shops and restaurants.
