getting married next year and on a budget, dont like the traditional wedding cakes, prefer the cupcake tiers type, eaier to hand out aswell, but at £2 per cupcake then accessories, was wondering if it would be cheaper to do yourself?ive been able to bake the basic fairycake recipe since young, but maybe with some special icing utensils, cupcake holders, etc,im sure i could manage something with a bit of practise?
has anyone had experience with this as i am a novice and any advice greatly appreciated.thanks

would you have the time?
say the wedding is on a saturday, you would need to make the cakes on the thursday and then ice them on the friday.
Could you store them ok? if using a butter icing you cant really have them stacked up.
i have made cupcakes for my kids birthdays, and used one of those wire stands for them and theyve worked out well considering i am not very good in kitchen lol
pink, you won't want the hassle as your wedding approaches, believe me. Bite the bullet and get someone else to do it for you. There is so much to organise and fine-detail in the couple of weeks before a wedding that baking on your wedding run-up will be something you don't need. We made all our arrangements ourselves and we were on a very tight budget, the catering was the biggest percentage of our budget. Shop around, take several quotes from local cake-makers, see their sample work - there are plenty of bakers out there who would love to undertake this project for you.
Have you considered a cheese wedding cake ??
pink, where are you in the UK?
i have a friend on my FB who makes cakes, but shes in Norfolk.
ask around, you may find many cake makers who are working from home and cost a lot less.
how on earth can anyone charge you £2 for each cupcake, that is a ridiculous price, find someone reasonable is my addvise, or get several friends to make a few dozen each. good luck with the cakes and the future.
cecil,
think how much some of these traditional wedding cakes cost and how many they serve. £2 a head probably isnt far off the mark once decorated.

im in lancashire,i was actually guna rope my mum and gran in to be honest to do the baking!i know what you mean about the time but its such an informal wedding i'm not even bothered about the cutting of the cake palava!!just wanted something easy and cheap!!i will have a look for local cakemakers,we dont even like cake it's just another expense for the guests really!hopefully they'll be too busy on the bucking bronco to wonder where the cake is!!!lol!
costco started doing a tray of large, decorated cupcakes fairly recently, not sure how much they are, at a guess i would think a lot less than £2 each.
costco cake is pretty nice but the 'butter' icing they use is a bit over the top in that they use far too much. if you have a costco card, or know someone who does, it might be worth having a look given that you want to keep costs down and don't even like cake yourselves. you could always titivate them up a bit to suit yourself too.
just a thought.
just been googling around and apparently lots of people use them for a wedding, they cost approx £10.99 for 20 and are about 3 times the size of a normal cupcake. seems the cake is really nice but a criticism is there's too much icing. that's easily remedied though, just take some off and put your own decoration on top.
The whole thing with cupcake wedding cakes is they are done with special designs, and coordinated cases etc... unless you have a really good local baker it may look tacky... you will probably need to invest in some flowers or something to stick on the tops to make them look weddingy although white iced ones with edible glitter and a little silver dove charm on each would look pretty, saw that done recently on a cupcake stand with doilies that mathche the brides flowers and I know they'd bought the cakes at around 60p each so add around 30p for decoration it comes in a bit cheaper
just found this site:

have a look at all the photos. lots of hints too.
