How do you connect to the internet, broadband modem, broadband router or dial-up modem?

By Broadband modem
open internet explorer and then click on the tools menu, select options, click on the connections tab and put a tick in never dial a connection.

Thanks for that ChuckFickens but being a wrinklie I'm a bit worried how, I could then connect to the internet. At the moment to connect I click on a Desktop icon for my connection. So doing what you suggest, does that mean only me clicking on that icon would be able to access the computer and any external source would be unable to connect.
Once the connection is made (regardless of if you initiate it manually by clicking the icon on the desktop, or if it is made automatically) anything on your computer will be able to use that connection.

To be honest though, unless you have a very limited download cap on your broadband and you are worried about exceeding that I'd just let it connect automatically whenever it wants to.

Cheers ChuckFickens I think at my time of life I'll do as you suggest and keep things as they are

I don't know if you will read this ChuckFickens but what outside source would trigger my computer to go on-line
No outside source will be able to trigger your computer going online.

Anything running on your computer can trigger the connection, including windows updates, any other software updates (adobe and apple are two common ones)

Also any software like the MSN chat client can trigger the connection if it's set to login at startup.

Basically anything that wants an internet connection.
