i saw a picture of earths magnetic field and was wondering that if you had a 3d compass would it point towards the ground near the north pole?

Yes, it would point downwards. It would point directly downwards at one of the Magnetic Poles. The Magnetic Poles do not correspond exactly to the North and South Poles.
