A gyroscope is a rapidly spinning mass, often freely pivoted. Because it has a large amount of angular momentum in one particular direction, it would take a large twisting force to change this angular momentum to a different direction. Large twisting forces are usually absent, so the gyroscope tends to keep spinning in the same direction.
