The airline will require photo I.D. when you check in and a passport is a good way to provide this.

You do require up to date government photographic identification. This can be a passport, photo driving liscence or an immigration card.

I tried to fly from Stanstead to Blackpool last week with an out-dated passport and was refused entry to the boarding area, and had to get the train in the end.

Some airlines insist on a valid passport only. It should say on the T&C of your booking. I know people who have been refused travel!!
What is an immigration card????
Gosh, how long have you had to have ID to fly within the UK

Pollyfrance -- it was brought in after 9/11 on the grounds of security. But really it is more to do with the airlines stopping people selling tickets privately. Now there are flexible ticket prices you could buy tickets for a few pounds long in advance then sell them at any price on e-bay or at the airport on the day.
