G'Day all
My daughter's house was burgled for the 3rd time at 5.30 yesterday. Luckily they have an alarm system and all they stole was some money and a necklace - think the alarm scared them off. The powers that be say that crime is falling and that our prisons are "overfull" (shame for them ?). What would you do to these scumbags if you were given the opportunity to pronounce sentence in court ? (Assuming that they were caught of course.)

awww that's nasty. not sure what i'd do with them - does it have to be legal?
Gordon Brown was robbing us for years and all he got was a P45.
Depends on the nature of the burgler

It doesn't exactly sound the work of a sophisticated professional thief does it?

I don't see the point of sending kids to prison for a few months to learn how to do it better - the reoffending rate is astronomical

If it's drug addicts looking for money to finance their habbit it might help if it gets them clean but if they're just kicked out onto the street after we all know that they'll be back doing the same thing in 20 seconds flat.

The best thing is

a) To make sure that judges have a range of powers and use them sensibly depending on the sort of offender in front of them

b) To try and get detection rates up - at the moment only about 1 in 8 burglaries results in a prosecution - you can make punishment as stiff as you like but if you don't catch anybody it doesn't help.

(sorry you probably want answers like cut their hands off)

(3rd time in how long? )I'd think about moving to a better neighbourhood
Tell your daughter to leave a light on and the tv or radio on. If going our for a while ask a family friend/neighbour to close curtains at night.

Thanks for all the replies. TTG - this time it was in broad daylight, these (whatever you want to call them) have no fear of anything or anyone, no respect for anything or anyone, the list goes on. They are the parasites of society. There, I've got it off of my chest now.

I was burgled last year for the 2nd time. They took jewellry, valuables, and my family's sense of security in the one place they should always feel comfortable and safe. For that alone I would deal harshly with burglars.
