If I want/need to get quite wasted quite quickly and I know that a snakebite is the way to go, is drinking a strong lager *then* a strong cider the same - i.e. mix the 'cocktail' in your stomach. Or is the magic potion only achieved by physically mixing the cider and lager together prior to drinking ???

Sorry to disappoint you but there's nothing "magical" about the concoction - both methods will have the same effect. As little/no alcohol is absorbed on the way down, then so the alcohol absorption happens in the stomach. Therefore it doesn't matter whether you pour one down after the other, or altogether as the alcohol/fluid ratio will still be the same in the stomach. To "get wasted" quickly you would need to increase the alcohol/fluid ration, or more simply drink something stronger i.e. spirits (35-40% when compared with lager/cider around 4-5%)
I advise that you firstly please check out a few sites on the effect of binge drinking on the liver, before you think that DV advocates drinking (A jedi knight is in control at all times!)

I went to a lecture recently where it was stated that the 'optimum' strength of alcohol to absorb the quickest was 15%. So cheap sherry works well.
The only thing I will say is if you choose to ogo for a snakebite, it might be best to order cider and lager separate (seeing as it works the same) as some places might not serve it to you. I worked in a Litten Tree and we were told that if anyone asked for beer and lager together, or half beer, half cider and an empty pint glass etc, that we weren't allowed to serve them, as some people can react badly to the alcohol fermenting in your stomach. Still, not everyone listens, and if someones ordering a round, and one person wants lager, one wants cider, you can't exactly stop them, so you'd probably get away with it! :)
