I would hope that if your cat were near death you would have sorted it out with a vet and knew it was ok and not in pain, then you let the cat do what it wants, cat's do that anyway I guess.
Not sure about what youre supposed to do, but when my cat died she kept herself away from us. She spent her last night under a bush in the garden when she wouldnt normally be out there on her own in the dark (she was scared of the bigger cats!). As dothawkes says they pretty much do what they want, but if its suffering then its best that you take control.
like dothawkes says..sort it with your cat's vet. I took his advice and held the old girl, who was twenty, whilst the vet gave her the much needed relief from her suffering....
Well, I do know that cats like to be alone when they die, but all the same I would try to be with my cat to the very end. It's a horrible thought, but the day must come when your pet and animal companion of many years is going to die. I was with my dog while she was getting 'put to sleep', and I will be with my cat when it's his turn.
God even reading this is making me cry, one of my wee cats was run over and I still feel guilty that she died alone, if/when my other two go, I'm never getting any more animals, it breaks your heart

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat Franny.

I would go along with dothawkes idea & pop him/her along to the vet to be checked over (if you haven't already done that).

I said that last year mycatis when my 17 year old cat had to be put to sleep.  We were with her.  I said I would never get another. Now I have 2 gorgeous cats for the last year or so and wouldn't be without them.  Animals will always need a good home.
I would stay with my cat untill she died! I dont think i could bear to leave her. as yet this has never been a problem for me as min have been knocked down by cars.

Why are you asking this question? The title of your post is "not that my cats near to death",Obviously if you love your cat then be there to comfort it.Find it rather upsetting this question and not sure the point of your post if your cat not near to death?

I put this up because my last cat died and i did not know if I did not know if I should of been with it are not so bye now
My cat - Cleo - had to be put to sleep on Monday and I wasn't there when it happened... my dad took her because she was having trouble balancing. When he called to say what I happened (her mouth had become seriously infected and the vet advised that any medication would only postpone the inevitable), I really wished I had been there too as I thought it was just going to be a routine visit to the vets.

But your pets know you love them and I gave her a very good life ... aw... I've gone all teary again ... :( !!!!

I remember when my last cat had to be put to sleep-i was thirteen and my parents were on hols, grandad looking after me so i had to make the decision to have him put to sleep, v sad. Anyway, after initially deciding against it I went in in while the vet did it and I'm glad I did. My kitty didn't like the vet at the best of times and I'd hate to think that he would have been in there not only in pain but confused and in a bad mood as well!

PS, congrats on the kittens!

Aw mattfox poor you, I'm really sorry for you and hope you are ok,all my love x x

I was a tad confused too Franny - but relieved to know your cat isn't dying. Good luck with the new litter.

mattfox - I'm so sorry to hear about your little cat Cleo.

We used to have a cat called Cleo, she was pure white & totally deaf. Unfortunately she was knocked down & killed, so I know how you must be feeling. Chin up!

Sorry franny I seemed bit crappy too you on my last post-apologize
