Can someone help me to identify something growing in my garden. Very tall and bushy on top, the stems look like bamboo and the leaves are very sharp, infact you can cut your hands on them. Its growing wild and no matter how much I cut it down, its just grows again. The birds pick at the top bits, most probably to make nest as its very soft. Thankyou

There's probably a very good reason why the stems look like bamboo - it sounds very much like an ornamental bamboo! Search for 'Phyllostachys' on Google Images and see if anything looks familiar.

Chris
could it be pampas grass??
If it's bamboo, scrape away at the soil round the roots, it propagates on runners so you have to cut them out under ground. My bamboo (negris) is suddenly shooting up, the new shoots are about 8 ft tall.
