Going slightly off-topic here ..... Is this thread reminding anyone of the lovely Gelda? It is me.
Question Author
Is that the lady who we had to assume died last year?
Yep Salla. We humans need to be cleaner, more carefully with our refuse and not encourage them into our gardens. They are not pets, they are wild animals. Unfortunately, as someone else has said, we have taken over a lot of their
natural habitat.
Yes sal. She loved the family of foxes that visited her garden, and often posted of their antics.
Question Author
She'd have been very upset about this particular incident then?
Bless her. I hope there are foxes where she's gone to (not being facetious here).
She was a lovely lady Mrs Chappie. Now thinking of Ethel as well :o(
I never had the pleasure of chatting with Gelda.
A very gentle lady who loved nature.
Me too, Lottie. [:o(

Sal - Yes, she adored the foxes.
Gelda had treatment in the unit I used to work in by one of the consultants I worked with. She was a nice lady and I think I actually know who she was but obviously can't be 100%. I hope she had as peaceful an ending as possible if that's indeed what has happened.
Ummm . . . yes I know people can sneak in houses and take children. I was just saying though that you would not expect a fox to come into your house! (that's providing it did) I'm sure we're all 'guilty' of leaving our doors open from time to time on a warm evening.
I notice people are saying that humans are filthy, but it doesn't help that rubbish is now collected fortnightly and many people don't have garages to keep their rubbish.
I really hope the little girls that were attacked, make a full recovery but as this is an isolated incident, I don't think all foxes should be culled.
I personally would be too paranoid to leave my back door open knowing I had children asleep upstairs alone.
We live in a small house though, so we'd see anything going up the stairs from the living room.

Eddie, if you read my post correctly, you will see that I didn't say 'totally'. I said almost totally. Granted that dreadful time was a long time ago, and in some parts the rabbit population has recovered. Not so here in the North West, where rabbits are now very few and far between.
Yes, I often think of Gelda, she was a very special lady, who bore her illness with the utmost dignity. She was an inspiration to many of her friends on AB, and she is missed.
Just a quick comment.

On Spring Watch last night they said that they had made an attempt using all the reporters and past information to find out of any similar occurence due to foxes and had found nothing.

They urged people not to react to this in a disproportionate way and not to worry unnecessarily.
This whole "cull" stinks of "getting revenge" on an animal. Read Moby Dick, the whole premise is set out to prove that you can't get revenge on an animal!
I find it very interesting that this story has been given such prominence after the Queens speech made no reference to the re legalisation of hunting. I understand that the current proposal is to have a free vote "at some point" on whether or not a motion should be brought forward, ie have a vote about whether to vote. What a convenient time to have a story about big nasty foxes rampaging into a bedroom attacking innocent children.
I too find the story a touch far fetched.....
so far as the fox/rabbit thing if the foxes consume the food source then in the absence of other food sources their population will decline and the rabbit population will recover. I would blame myxi on declining rabbit pops before I blamed foxes.
As far as a cull goes, what would be the point? If there continues to be food and shelter then there will continue to be foxes, as you kill the ones that are there, more will move in
