Nissan micra and make sure you get a power steering one, also peugeot 106 is good, old shape might be in your price range

Renault clio 1.1 or as Suzie says, Peugeot 1.1 or 1.5 diesel, both are cheap to run.

Going off your Q Maplestar regards the cost, what ever car you are going to get, get someone with mechanical knowledge to go with you, other wise you may find that you will be another that has been ripped off as this site has often seen & heard of. Good Luck.
