Little Blue Signs on the M25

I was traveling from essex to kent on the M25 the other day and i saw Blue signs with numbers on when i was traveling clockwise the numbers increased i.e the sign would say A 54.3 then a bit further A 54.8 then on the anti clockwise when i was coming home it would have B 34.5 and so on does anyone know what this is refering to??

they are reference points for the emergency services. A means away and B means back, eg if you were travelling up the M1, the source of the M1 is London and the A carriageway is away from London and B is back (as in northbound and southbound) the numbers are miles away from the beginning of the motorway so A54.3 is 54.3 miles North of the beginning of the M1 and B34.5 is 34.5 from Leeds (the M1 ends in Leeds).

Not sure how it applies to the M25 that is a circle, suppose they have to have a start/end position somewhere.

So if the fire bridage get called to a car fire at B112.4 on the M1 they know its on the Southbound carraigeway 112.4 miles south of Leeds.
