....after having a weeks worth of laptop problems which, Chuck kindly sorted out ... it's now my desktops turn.
It's a Fujitsu Scaleo P... running XP. ( I have a recovery disk...no XP disk)
When I try to start it a black screen appears with white writing saying...

''Re-boot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key.''

The screen keeps appearing as I try to re-start it ...... But if I insert the recovery disk it starts as normal.

Any ideas whats gone wrong..?

change the boot sequence to local HDD from the bios setting.
Have you left a floppy disk or CD or DVD in somewhere ?

It sounds like a bug that's been part of PCs since the year dot, whereby if the first boot device in its list of devices to try, holds no media it sensibly tries the next device in the list, but if the device does hold media but the media isn't bootable it foolishly stops & moans, just to annoy you.
You may even find something unexpected can cause the problem. I've even known PCs get stopped by having a printer connected !
