There are three theories: 1- due to the sun glinting off the surface of the surrounding mountains (around Sinai) giving it a red colour 2- Due to a red plankton bloom that happens occasionally 3- Due to its shallow nature close to shore, it used to have dense reed beds all along the coast- reed has been shortened to red over the years. Take your pick!!
