How do bananas ripen? When you get them they are all green and nice but they end up all speckley and sweet and horrible. There must be something scientific going on - but what?

Hi bobbasil,

Bananas emit Ethylene Gas,which helps them to ripen quickly( too quickly as you have discovered). What to you is sweet and horrible,is great for banana's reproduction.

BTW Don't keep bananas near ANY other fruit, the Ethylene Gas that ripens them also causes other fruit to ripe too quickly too!

Now a bit of trivia, did you know that the banana plant is the biggest herb in the world?

Did you find that a~peeling?

Do you think they'll become extinct soon as is rumoured?
..if you have an unripe avocado or rock hard peaches , pop them in a paper bag with some ripe bananas, should speed up the ripening process nicely...
