Reference to my previous post. The engineer told my mom that the faulty part goes down from where the little lights are displayed on the front of the freezer and it is the part that controls the temperature. He said it would cost £155.00 which seems a lot. Does anyone have a clue what this part might be called so I can shop around for a possible better price? My mom lives miles away frome, she is 83 and she has been conned before by certain unscrupulous tradesmen, so now I have to try and safeguard her against possible rogues from a distance. I think there a minority who take advantage of the elderly but am in no way suggesting they are all the same and I want to be sure he is being fair with her.

The part that controls the temp is possibly the thermostat, but they may also mean a circuit board that the thermostat is connected to.
It will be the Thermostat foxyferret. If I was you I would contact another Service Engineer as what this guy has quoted her seems exorbitant. She could buy a new Freezer for that price so get another quote from a reputable Engineer before you proceed to do anything else.

since heard from mom again. he has said it is the circuit breaker which well it may be. However the climate rating on her fridge is SN which I believe means suitable for use in a room which is no lower than 10 degrees and no higher than 32 degree. As her freezer is out in the garage, there is no way the room temperature is 10 degrees. Is it possible that it may have stopped working because it is just too cold? I don't know how he concludes that the circuit board is at fault for certain when there may not be anything wrong with the circuit board, it could all be down to climate rating could'nt it? I would have thought that he might have suggested moving it to a warmer room for a few days to see what happened. On the other hand it could be exactly what he says, he now says he can do the whole job for £135.00 including part, labour and VAT. I have checked on line and found circuit boards for this particular model at about £68.00 with postage, so is his price reasonable bearing all this in mind. Sorry to go on about this but as I said before, I have to try and look out for her when I live nowhere near, so you can imagine how difficult it can be sometimes with phone calls going back and forth. Many thanks for putting up with me and if anyone feels like answering I would appreciate it.

Hi foxyferret !
The best thing to do is to get a second opinion from another Engineer who has no callout charges and gives Free estimates. She may only require a Thermostat but she needs a second opinion to determine this.
There are rip-off merchants out there and a second opinion from a reputable guy should confirm what the problem is with her Fridge-Freezer.
For a little more outlay she can purchase a brand new one from the likes of Comet .....check the Prices and Consumer ratings from above site.
Good luck !

thanks Redman 41, I think we will do just that, call another chap for a second opinion. I see what you mean about buying a new one, I think if she can live without the freezer for now, it might be a good idea. There are some bargains in the sales. Anyway many thanks for all your help and to everyone that replied.
