what is the resister for that sits above the drivers side headlight on vw t4 transporter 2000 plate as mine is broken in two. anything series.

Could be the Heater Blower motor ballast resistor (a resistor used to control blower speeds)
Is blower working all speeds?
it allows the headlights to come on with reduced voltage when sidelights and ignition are tuned on.
That is a system called Dim Dip Headlights and is not used now since mid-1990's.
Introduced as requirement 01 Apr 1987.
