What are widgets?

Can someone please explian to me what WIDGETS are please?

Also if they know any good programs that can help me create widgets.

I think they are to do with flash or something. Self contained bits of coding.

Isn't a widget just a small bit of GUI such as a button that often executes a block of code such as a "function"?

if you are using Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) Wigets are part of the Desktop feature that consist of small desk accessories, that perform small useful tasks. They appear on your desktop at the hit of a function key. For example my widgets at the moment are a World Clock, a weather forecast, a uk train timetable, a small window displaying CEEFAX, a translation tool, and a Wikipedia window.
