I have just changed Broadband ( etc) suppliers, who have sent me a new package of gadgets and widgets. I now have a package of the last supplier's old gadgets and widgets. Not to mention bits of wire - or are they cables ? What am I supposed to do with the old ones ? Will the original supplier want them back ?

Surely if they did they'd have asked for them. Chances are they've been written off. Spare cables/routers must be worth something to you. Keep as back up for now.
