Just to add to Josiah's answer, the syllabuses/syllabi for GCSE were introduced in 1986. The first exams were held in 1988.

Depends on the interpretation of the question.

The first exams were held in 1988 ( I had an examiners' meeting on my birthdayn that year!! ) but GCSE is a two-year course so we started teaching the syllabus in 1986.
