How much does the situation in Pakistan have to deteriorate before NATO or the UN gets involved?
Or is the situation no threat to the West, as some on this site would have us believe?

Unless you have the resident population on your side how can the Taliban ever be defeated as they have one thing in common and that is the Muslim religion. Now the Taliban have expanded into Pakistan and given approval by their Prime Minister. The Americans and NATO should beat a hasty retreat!
Anotheoldgit - I would love to find out that how many times have you been to Pakistan? And how much do you know about Taliban, situation in Pakistan and the role of NATO, Pakistan Forces and USA?
Or do you just get all this from Daily mail and other newspapers who told us same stories about Afghansitan and Iraq once the Americans had already decided to attack those countries.

I listened to Paddy Ashdown on radio 2 yesterday, a man who is incredibly experienced and knowledgable about the Afghanistan and Pakistan situation.
I'd recommend that if you didn't catch him on the Steve Wright show, download the podcast of the interview.
After that I thought, he really was the prime minister we missed!

No I have never been to Pakistan, and have no wish to either. what I and most of the civilised world do know, is the fact that we should be very concerned of what is happening in Pakistan.
You can make your cheap jibe regarding the Daily Mail, but all of the free world's media, left or right are aware of the facts. But that is of course not the message that is being force fed by the Islamic media or in the Mosque on a Friday.
Regarding how much I know about the Taliban, I cannot say I know more than you, because I do not know if you are a sympathiser or not.
What I do know is the fact that they are a load of cowardly scumbagsI who hide behind the skirts of women and children.
If it wasn't for the fact that they were facing the British the most honourable troops in the world, who are restricted due to their terms of engagement, the Taliban would be blasted from the face of earth, regardless of the consequences.

Is it the same media and intelligence who made our minds about WMD in Iraq?
What you said about Taliban then I do agree with you 100% about the ones who are killig innocent people. But unfortunately all the people who are presented here as Taliban might not be Taliban. Trust me they all carry rifles as that is part of tradition there.
Naomi - I (alongwith majority of Pakistani people) believe about what I have said here so many times. And the way this situation is going that is proving me right. Main target has always been Pakistan's neuclear capabilities. Simply few countries in this world just can not digest a Muslim country's neuclear capability. The Taliban who are creating problem in Pakistan are about 15K people in all but the amazing facts are that they are getting extremly good money, latest weapons and professional training. Only money (according to a source) is around RS 15K (average) each. So 15K X 15K X 12= yearly money. Now where are they getting all that? CIA and Co is the thought among the ex army intelligence sources in Pakistan.
Now I am off somewhere, so more later.

OUR MINDS
Maybe your mind but certainly not mine.
I have always said we should have sorted out Pakistan in the first place, that is where the terrorist problem is coming from.

With the entire international community now pointing out that the Taliban threat to Pakistan is dire, Islamabad finds itself diplomatically isolated as it continues to fail to respond.
I don't know how often you travel to Pakistan, but believe me, I think your days of 'popping' over on holidays etc are quickly coming to a close.
In Britain we can only hope that the situation does not create an enormous influx of refugees from the area, we just cannot cope in this already overcrowded island of ours.

Well outcome should be peaceful for every one. Best solution (and there is none else) is that USA should pull out of Afghanistan, tell the world truth about 9/11, reduce CIAs budget whose main objective is to create trouble in other countries.
And Pakistan government should accept and tell their people truth and stop filling their personal bank accounts in Switzerland. Simply 15K people just can not over come a country that has over one million professional army. Good thing is that media in Pakistan in last few years has made it difficult for the govts to hide too much.
Taliban, Al qaeeda or Saddam Hussein, all of these (although not angels) had been presented to the world as greatest threats ever. Whereas any body with a little bit knowledge about ground realities knows what Al qaeeda or Taliban who only ever lived in one of the most destroyed and poor country, Afghanistan had no sources nor funding to do what they are blamed for.
As far as tribal areas of Pakistan are concerned then I would say what American think tank said too. USA should have learned a lesson from Britain that why they never touched those areas when they almost ruled all over the world.
