the sound has gone off on my computer [ dell] does anyone know what i can try to restore it

First, check your audio icon at the bottom right hand side and make sure it`s not muted.If that`s not the problem go to audio device or sound in control panel, and see what is says in there. If the audio icon in control panel is greyed out, you probably need to reinstall your sound driver.

You can also check mute status in your key board as well.
There must be three dedicated key for volume control. Sound up, sound down and mute.
