Were there any instances where convicted criminals of lesser crimes such as burglary etc given the choice to join up or go to prison and did call up papers for young men arrive on their 18th birthday or sometime before/after that time?

I would guess at yes, when I was in the Army, in my Regument we had a few who were given exactly that choice.

Sadly, its not given anymore.
