after watching robin hood on bbc1, i wondered if the actor jonas armstrong is any relation to alun armstrong of new tricks fame

No, but Alun is the father of Joe Armstrong, who played Allun-A-Dale in the BBC Robin Hood.

Sam Troughton, who plays Much, is the grandson of Patrick Troughton, who played Robin Hood for the BBC in the 1950's.
